Round 10: Coca-Cola 120

The ASCS hit their halfway point with the longest race of the season: An 80-lapper @ Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte, North Carolina. Let's get us some highlights!

The start

The main stars of the race were Bobby Labonte and Kurt Busch, who spent most of the race battling for the lead.

1st Caution: Jerry Nadeau goes around after Ken Schrader puts him in the wall.

Just past the halfway point, Labonte has a close call while trying to lap Kenny Irwin Jr, but saves it.

Pit stops!

2nd Caution: Irwin hits the wall...

...then is hit by Dave Marcis.

Despite the drama, nothing could slow down the green 18.

Bobby Labonte cruises to his 2nd win of the season!

Dale Earnhardt remains the points leader heading into the All-Star break, but if the 18 team keeps up this momentum, that could change before you know it!

Round 11: Southern 100

After an awesome All-Star Festival, the NR2002 ASCS got back to work with the regular season, starting with the Southern 100 @ Darlington, which brought 74 laps of intense battling for position, another first-time winner, and a plot twist that caused the dropping of multiple jaws.

Highlights:

Matt Kenseth leads the field to green for the first time this season.

It doesn't last long though, as the 17 gives up the lead by scraping the wall on lap 5.

As the race went on, the field began to spread out...

...but that came to an end with this Kenny Irwin Jr spin.

As the race neared its conclusion, lapped cars would play a factor as Jeff Burton and the Exide Batteries Ford pull away.

Jimmie Johnson radio communications, lap 60:
Chad Knaus: "Careful Jimmie, it's starting to get pretty tight out there."
JJ: "I see that, but I need to get into this championship hunt. Looks like Elliott's being held up by the 42, so I'll just duck under them and---OH SH*T!"

Broadcaster: "And that, ladies and gentlemen, might have just turned this championship race upside down!"

That turn of events benefited Burton, who would claim his first win of season, albeit under caution thanks to a Ryan Newman/Dave Marcis crash with 3.5 to go.

Race 12: Brickyard 80

Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the most famous racetrack in the world, welcomed the NR2002 ASCS for a 32-lap showdown of racing greats from various seasons

Highlights:

The field of 42 takes the green flag.

The drama was building up even before the first lap was completed! This is Michael Waltrip, Davey Allison, and Jimmy Spencer tangling in turn 3, which oddly didn't bring out the caution.

Just after the start of lap 2, the caution does fly after last week's winner, Jeff Burton, goes around with help from Tony Stewart.

Everyone scramble to avoid the 99! Dale Earnhardt Jr failed to catch that message, as did a few others.

Shortly after the restart, Greg Biffle and Rusty Wallace tangle entering turn 3, but again, no caution!

Jimmie Johnson pulls ahead on lap 13.

With the field spreading out as the laps ticked down, Johnson had little-to-no challenge in the closing laps.

Team 48 takes their first checkered flag of the season (thanks mainly to 2 cautions that never happened!)

Round 13: Auto Club 80

The bright lights of California played host to the 13th round of the NR2002 ASCS.

Highlights:

Dale Jarrett leads the field to green for the 4th time this season.

For the second straight race, the field failed to complete the first lap without trouble breaking out. However, this three-car pile-up would be the only caution of the race.

In the early stages, it was clear that the field couldn't decide who the leader should be. Would it be Terry Labonte?

Dale Jarrett?

Jeff Burton?

Or Kurt Busch?

Well, after taking the lead at the halfway point, the 97 would start to pull away as the field spread out. Would Busch hold on?

Why, yes he would! Apparently still motivated by being the All-Star Fan Vote winner, Kurt Busch would cruise to victory @ Fontana as the 11th different winner this season!

Round 14: Tropicana 80

The NR2002 ASCS headed to the home of Jayhawks and other things, Kansas, for the 14th race in their season

Highlights:

Points leader Dale Earnhardt leads the field to green.

Early on, it was the Dale and Dale show as Earnhardt and Jarrett battled for first.

But Terry Labonte and Bill Elliott wanted in on the battle too!

Lap 28: Labonte snags second from Jarrett.

One lap later, The Iceman seizes the lead!

On lap 42, Elliott is forced onto pit road when something goes wrong with his car. The problem would be fixed, but not before the 9 went several laps down.

Team Kellogg's claims victory for the second time this season!

Round 15: KMart 80

The 15th stop for the NR2002 ASCS was Michigan, which gave us a lot of drama in 40 laps!

Highlights:

The start.

Polesitter Terry Labonte dominated early on, but soon enough, points leader Dale Earnhardt and Bill Elliott were giving him a challenge!

Labonte, Elliott, and Earnhardt battling for the lead, what could possibly go wrong?

Well...how about this:

Joe Nemechek and Neil Bonnett get together while trying to avoid this...turn of events (to say the least).

While Elliott retired after that dust-up, Earnhardt was able to continue, but had a lot of ground to make up.

Meanwhile, Earnhardt's son, Dale Jr, steals the show by taking the lead from Labonte on lap 26.

Labonte wouldn't back down from this challenge though, and stayed with #8 all the way to the white flag.

The 8 and the 5 spent the final lap trying to one-up each other, but was Little E who finished the day on top, winning by three hundredths of a second!.

And while I'm here, I might as well post the names of the final 5 events.

Chicagoland: STP 80
Phoenix: Dura-Lube 100K
Homestead-Miami: Ford 80
Talladega: Winston 100
Daytona: Pepsi 80

And another thing, Chicagoland was supposed to have the Tropicana 80 name, with Kansas being the STP 80, but got things mixed up and didn't realize it until just now. They'll have the correct names next season. Speaking of next season, the driver roster for my second season is being worked on. I'll have an in-progress Season 2 roster up this afternoon.
